Metkovic has great agricultural opportunities in the Neretva valley (citrus fruit). It is also known for its cultural heritage (Narona, Mogorjelo - Bosnia and Herzegovina). In recent times it has become an important border place (transit). The nearby Vid (4 km), with the remains of the ancient Narona, is very attractive for tourists.

An important sight in the town of Metkovic is the Ornithological Museum of the Lower Neretva, with some 250 specimens of various bird species, found in the surroundings. The area around Metkovic is an excellent fishing and hunting ground. Local restaurants offer the famous Neretva-style fish stew ("brudet") and grilled eels.

In the vicinity of Metkovic is the marshland Hutovo Blato (well-known hunting ground in Herzegovina), whose waters are rich in fish (carps, eels). In the winter months it is the habitat of various species of wading birds, especially wild ducks. In recent times Metkovic receives many pilgrims and visitors on their way to Medugorje.
