METKOVIC, a town and port in the lower course of the Neretva
river, 20 km from the river mouth; situated on the left bank of
the Neretva and on a slope of the Gledavac hill 247 m.Economy
is based on farming, fruit growing, livestock breeding, fishing,
processing of tobacco, food industry.

Metkovic has great agricultural opportunities in the Neretva
valley (citrus fruit). It is also known for its cultural
heritage (Narona, Mogorjelo - Bosnia and Herzegovina). In recent
times it has become an important border place (transit). The
nearby Vid (4 km), with the remains of the ancient Narona, is
very attractive for tourists. |

An important sight in the town of Metkovic is the Ornithological
Museum of the Lower Neretva, with some 250 specimens of various
bird species, found in the surroundings. The area around
Metkovic is an excellent fishing and hunting ground. Local
restaurants offer the famous Neretva-style fish stew ("brudet")
and grilled eels. |

In the vicinity of Metkovic is the marshland Hutovo Blato
(well-known hunting ground in Herzegovina), whose waters are
rich in fish (carps, eels). In the winter months it is the
habitat of various species of wading birds, especially wild
ducks. In recent times Metkovic receives many pilgrims and
visitors on their way to Medugorje. |
